What makes a good SKU

A SKU only earns its keep if it's short, meaningful and never reused.

  • Short — long enough to be unique, short enough to fit on a label and be read back over the phone without a typo.
  • Meaningful — a consistent structure (category, then attribute, then a sequence number) means a glance at the code tells you roughly what it is, without looking it up.
  • Never reused — once a SKU has shipped on an invoice or a receipt, retire it for good when the product is discontinued. Recycling it for a different product quietly corrupts every past record that mentions it.

Questions

What makes a good SKU?
Short, meaningful and never reused. Short so it fits on a label and a person can read it back over the phone; meaningful so a glance at the code tells you roughly what it is (category, size, color); never reused so a discontinued product's SKU is never quietly recycled for something else, which corrupts years of sales history.
Why avoid the letters O and I in a SKU?
Because a capital O looks like the digit 0, and a capital I looks like the digit 1 and the lowercase letter l, in most fonts and worse in handwriting. A SKU that's misread once on a packing slip becomes a picking error, a stock discrepancy, or a customer sent the wrong item — this tool flags any generated SKU containing those characters, and can drop them from the export entirely.
How does the bulk generator build multiple SKUs at once?
It takes every value you list in each attribute field (comma-separated) and the sequence number range, and generates one SKU for every combination — 3 colors x 4 sizes x 10 sequence numbers is 120 SKUs. Output is capped at 2,000 rows so the page never hangs; if your combination count is larger, narrow your lists or the sequence count to see the rest.
Does this tool store or upload my SKU list?
No. Everything is generated in your browser's memory and forgotten the moment you close or reload the tab — nothing is saved locally and nothing is sent anywhere. Download the CSV before you leave the page if you want to keep the list.

What this page cannot do

A SKU only matters if it does not collide.

This generates a code and shows it to you once — it has never seen a catalog, so it cannot tell you whether that SKU is already in use. Ochre stores a SKU on every product, and its integrity sweep flags duplicates that sync can produce; picking one that does not collide in the first place is still on you, but at least there is a real catalog to check it against.
